Teachers need to understand how languages are learnt and what factors influence language learning to help their learners learn effectively and easily. This will help them improve their own language competence which in turn will improve their teaching competence.

There are many factors that affect the learning of English for the learners of other languages. Some of the most important factors include:

  • Motivation: Learners who are motivated to learn English are more likely to succeed. Motivation can come from a variety of sources, such as a desire to improve one's job prospects, to travel, or to connect with English-speaking cultures.

  • Attitude: Learners who have a positive attitude towards English are also more likely to succeed. A positive attitude can be fostered by providing learners with opportunities to use English in real-world contexts and by celebrating their successes.

  • Age: There is some evidence that younger learners may have an easier time learning English than older learners. This is because younger learners' brains are more plastic and they are less inhibited about making mistakes. However, older learners can also be successful in learning English, especially if they are motivated and have access to high-quality instruction.

  • Aptitude: Some people seem to have a natural aptitude for learning languages, while others find it more difficult. However, aptitude is not the only factor that determines success in language learning. With hard work and dedication, anyone can learn English.

  • Cognitive style: People learn in different ways. Some people learn best by listening, while others learn best by reading, writing, or speaking. It is important to find a learning style that works for you and to use a variety of teaching methods.

  • Personality: Some personality traits, such as extraversion and openness to new experiences, can be helpful in language learning. However, personality is not as important as motivation and attitude.

  • Learning environment: The learning environment can also play a role in success. Learners who have access to high-quality instruction, supportive peers, and opportunities to use English in real-world contexts are more likely to succeed.

It is important to remember that everyone learns at their own pace. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to language learning. The most important thing is to find a method that works for you and to keep practising. With time and effort, you can achieve your goal of learning English.

Teachers need to identify ways of motivating the learners, providing tasks as per the age group, providing appropriate tasks for different types of learners and improve the learning environment in the class.
